RFMOs

Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) are affiliations of nations which co-ordinate efforts to manage fisheries in a particular region.

RFMOs may focus on certain species of fish (e.g the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna) or have a wider remit related to living marine resources in general within a region (e.g. the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources). This diversity of mandates and areas of application, and also varying effectiveness in implementing regulations, opens up opportunities for IUU vessels.

The map above shows the major RFMOs. You can click on the blue dots to bring up information on each, or click on the links below. For details of other RFMOs and fisheries bodies, click here for a link to a clickable map on the FAO website. Also on the FAO site is the information on the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats Network.

Major RFMOs:

AIDCP (Agreement on the International Dolphin Conservation Program)
CCAMLR (Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources)
CCSBT (Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna)
GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean)
IATTC (Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission)
ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas)
IOTC (Indian Ocean Tuna Commission)
NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation)
NASCO (North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation)
NEAFC (North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission)
SEAFO (South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation)
SPRFMO (South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation)
WCPFC (Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission)

Since August 2006, the Round Table for Sustainable Development has been working in cooperation with Chatham House to develop a 'model' for improved governance by RFMOs. For more information on this project click here for a link to relevant section of the OECD website.
