The ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies undertakes integrated research for sustainable use and management of coral reefs. It is funded under the Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence programme, and is based at James Cook University in Townsville. The Centre is a partnership of James Cook University (JCU), the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), The Australian National University (ANU), the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) and The University of Queensland (UQ).

ECOST Project
The main aim of the ECOST project is to develop a new approach to assess the societal cost of fishing activities and fishing policies. Work is spread over three continents that are characterised by ecosystems of coastal upwelling (West Africa), delta (Southeast Asia) and coral reef (Caribbean). The project is coordinated by the University of Portsmouth, Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (UOP), UK.

FishPopTrace
FishPopTrace is a collaborative project involving 15 research groups (from the EU, Norway and Russia), specialized in fish population genetics, molecular biology, proteomics, microchemistry and biochemistry, experts in wildlife forensics, stakeholders of the fisheries industry and, as a scientific consultant, a senior staff member of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). FishPopTrace was launched in March 2008 under the umbrella of the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The key to FishPopTrace's approach, which focuses on cod, herring, sole and hake, as initial sentinel species, is to develop a high throughput set of tools for species and population-specific identity of fish and fish products throughout the food supply chain.

International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)
ICES is the organisation that coordinates and promotes marine research in the North Atlantic. ICES works with an international community of over 1600 marine scientists from 19 member countries in Europe and North America. Scientists working through ICES gather information about the marine ecosystem. As well as filling gaps in existing knowledge, this information is also developed into unbiased, non-political advice.

Marine Conservation Biology Institute
Marine Conservation Biology Institute (MCBI) is a US-based non-profit science organisation dedicated to advancing the science of marine conservation biology and promoting cooperation essential to protecting, restoring and sustainably using the living sea. In an effort to bring the deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems to the forefront of the decision makers' minds, MCBI collected signatures from over a thousand of the world's foremost biologists from 69 countries. The historic statement signifies unprecedented concern by experts in marine sciences and conservation biology, and calls on governments and the United Nations to protect imperiled deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems. MCBI is a member of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition.
