Rome - A decision by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization s Fishing Commission was considered important by world experts Tuesday for its intention to step up controls at fishing ports. The FAO reported that the meeting earlier this month of 131 countries plus the European Commission will boost control on docking, transfer and processing fish.
This year and next there will be consultations to draft the voluntary Code of Conduct on Responsible Fishing that will be proposed for approval in 2009, calling for government revision of ship documents, cargo and equipment before docking.
This measures is considered the best way to fight illegal fishing of endangered species or exceeding the legal limit.
Illegal fishing impedes global recovery of fishing resources and has a negative impact on fish schools and entails significant loss of income. Source:
