Environment, biodiversity and fish stocks

Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing often has a significant detrimental impact on the sustainability of both targeted and non-targeted species and of the whole ecosystem.

Fishing generally has the capacity to damage fragile marine ecosystems and vulnerable species such as coral reefs, turtles and seabirds. Regulating legitimate fisheries is aimed at mitigating such impacts, but IUU fishers rarely comply with regulations. This is likely to reduce productivity and biodiversity and create imbalances in the ecosystem.

It is also worth noting that, even where fisheries are regulated, this may not be sufficient to protect ecosystems as regulators often put short-term economic, social or political gains before scientific advice and long-term sustainability.
