Its aim is to provide a platform from which to voice their opinions and to ensure that they act together in defence of their common interests. Cluster has 122 members and more than 370 ships. Sustainable Fisheries Livelihoods Programme
The Sustainable Fisheries Livelihoods Programme (SFLP) started in 1999 and was financed for 7 years. It is a partnership between the UK Department for International Development (DfID), FAO and 25 participating countries in West Africa. The SFLP aims to reduce poverty in coastal and inland fisheries communities through the sustainable improvement of their livelihoods. Outputs include a number of publications, available online.

It is one of 16 research centres of the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research), which is co-sponsored by the World Bank, FAO, UNDP and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
