Retail / consumers

Media attention and high-profile NGO campaigns have led to a growing awareness amongst retailers and consumers of the scourge of illegal fishing and the increasing fragility of many fisheries.

Supermarkets, restaurants and caterers in the UK, Canada, South Africa, the US, Portugal and other countries have introduced measures to ban certain products or seek alternative species or sources. In the case of tuna, this has been encouraged by a high-profile campaign involving many celebrities and the targeting of specific institutions. One UK retailer is also working with WWF to produce a guide to the types of fishing gear that can cut down the amount of fish discarded at sea.

A number of initiatives aimed at consumers have also been developed, such as 'traffic light' schemes enabling consumers to check the status of specific fish species before purchasing.

fish2fork

This website, established by UK journalist Charles Clover (author of 'The End of the Line'), rates restaurants that serve fish not only for the quality of their food but also for the effect they are having on the seas and on marine life. The site asks for consumers to fill in a form or email about restaurants or with any new information. Charles Clover says, "The success of this site will depend on your willingness to take part - the more information you can provide, the more powerful fish2fork.com will become as a force for change".
