Mauritius has an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 1.9 million km2, with stocks of pelagic and demersal species. Fisheries resources include the island-based artisanal fisheries, the offshore demersal fishery on the banks of the Mascarene Plateau and Chagos Archipelago, and the tuna fishery in the Western Indian Ocean.

Artisanal fishers catch lethrinids, scarids, sigannids and mullets in the lagoons and outer reef areas using traps, hook-and-line, harpoons, large nets and gillnets. In 2004, the average catch per fisher per day was 4.2kg. A major source of frozen fish for the Mauritian market are the shallow banks on the Mascarene Plateau where fishers operate from dories, transported by mother vessels. The catch accounts for 30% of fish consumed in Mauritius; fish is an important source of protein in the local diet.

The tuna fishery is the major industrial fishery and Mauritian longliners and European purse seiners exploit the tuna resources in the South West Indian Ocean. Princes Tuna Mauritius processes over 50,000 tonnes of canned tuna for export to the EU market. The Thon de Mascareignes, a joint Mauritian-Spanish venture, started operation in 2005 with a projected production of about 50,000 tonnes of tuna loins annually.

Mauritius is a member of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), which recently entered into a partnership with the EU to fight IUU fishing in the region. The partnership involves fisheries surveillance and capacity building in Indian Ocean countries.

Mauritius will benefit from a World Bank project, being coordinated by Kenya, to promote sustainable exploitation of fisheries in Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, Comoros, Mauritius, South Africa, Seychelles and Kenya.

Stop Illegal fishing

The commitment to stop illegal fishing already exists in Southern Africa. Countries, organisations and individuals are fighting illegal fishing on a daily basis. The Stop Illegal Fishing programme brings new international support to this fight. The Programme aims to facilitate a coherent regional commitment to tackling illegal fishing between the SADC coastal Member States of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Tanzania.
