Tanzania

Tanzania has a 750km coastline along the Indian Ocean, and the major islands of Zanzibar and Pemba account for an additional 675km of marine shore. The number of coastal marine fishers is estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000, operating 4-5,000 small craft. A small fleet of steel and wood hulled trawlers and purse seiners is also active.

Trawling for shrimps and purse seining for sardines expanded rapidly in the late 1980s-early 1990s and, by the mid-1990s, the shrimp fishery produced 1,000-1,300 tonnes annually, with an export value of US$11-14 million. A wide variety of small-scale and traditional gear also continues to be used. The main species caught are snapper, kingfish, shark, rays, shrimps, lobsters, sardines and sea cucumbers.

Shrimp caught for export is mainly destined for Europe and Japan, whilst most of the rest of the catch is absorbed by the domestic market, and accounts for around 30% of Tanzania's supply of animal protein. The expansion of the fishing capacity in the last 20 years has created a situation of full exploitation in the major fishing areas. In addition, coral mining, shell collection and pollution have all contributed to the degradation of the ecosystem. There are also frequent reports of damage to coral reefs by illegal dynamite fishing. However, Tanzania is in the process of ratifying an agreement with the EU which would allow EU tuna seiners and longliners to fish for migratory tuna species in Tanzanian waters;

Tanzania will benefit from a World Bank project, being coordinated by Kenya, to promote sustainable exploitation of fisheries in Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, Comoros, Mauritius, South Africa, Seychelles and Kenya.

Stop Illegal fishing

The commitment to stop illegal fishing already exists in Southern Africa. Countries, organisations and individuals are fighting illegal fishing on a daily basis. The Stop Illegal Fishing programme brings new international support to this fight. The Programme aims to facilitate a coherent regional commitment to tackling illegal fishing between the SADC coastal Member States of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Tanzania.
