Mozambique

Mozambique's fishing industry can be divided into artisanal, semi-industrial and industrial. Artisanal fishing provides livelihoods for more than 50,000 families and supplies food for a large proportion of the population. Fishers use handlines, beach seines and gillnets. The semi-industrial sub-sector consists mostly of Mozambique companies with up to four vessels, usually foreign charters. Vessels target mainly shrimp.

Industrial fishing is mainly operated through joint ventures between the government and foreign companies from Japan and Spain. The main commercial species are lobster, crabs, gamba (deep-water shrimp), shrimp, crayfish and squid. Lobster, shrimp and gamba are the main exports with key markets in other African states, Hong Kong, Japan, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the UK.

Mozambique is currently included in a programme of country studies by the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa involving exploring what is known about the scale and nature of illegal fishing and weaknesses in regulation of the fishing sector. Following an increase in illegal fishing, the US donated three vessels to Mozambique to increase capacity for surveillance early in 2007. The Commander of Mozambique's navy has stated that 'pirate fleets' concentrate their activities around the Bazaruto archipelago, a marine reserve and national park 30km off the mainland.

As a follow on action from the High Seas Task Force, the UK government is supporting an African policy process to tackle IUU fishing in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa. The programme brief and first update is available here.

Stop Illegal fishing

The commitment to stop illegal fishing already exists in Southern Africa. Countries, organisations and individuals are fighting illegal fishing on a daily basis. The Stop Illegal Fishing programme brings new international support to this fight. The Programme aims to facilitate a coherent regional commitment to tackling illegal fishing between the SADC coastal Member States of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Tanzania.
