Belize

The fishing sector contributes over 5-7% to Belize’s GDP, with the majority of revenue accruing from exports of lobster, conch and shrimp. It is a predominantly commercial artisanal industry, with a small industrial trawl shrimp fishery. Unlike many small-nation fishing industries, Belize’s is considered successful and lucrative, mainly because most fishermen belong to one of the four main cooperatives.

The Belize government takes a firm line with vessels caught engaged in illegal fishing in its waters and has introduced a number of conservation measures, including the establishment of eight marine reserves to date.

However, on the international fishing scene, Belize is most well known as a rogue flag state. Numerous vessels flagged to Belize have been observed and, on occasions, apprehended in recent years in areas as far apart as the Sea of Japan, the South Pacific, the Southern Ocean and West Africa, accused of engaging in illegal activities. Greenpeace claims that Belizean flags can be bought over the internet for as little as $500.
