The fisheries sector in Greece is considered important for the national economy, despite its small contribution to GDP (around 0.3-0.4%), because it helps to maintain the economic and social cohesion of many coastal areas and the Aegean and Ionian islands. Shore fishing continues to be one of the most important economic and social activities in coastal areas, where fishing and tourism support each other. Approximately 38,000 people are employed in the fishing sector.

The fishing industry consists of over 17,000 professional fishing vessels including trawlers, purse seines, beach seines, surface longliners, gill-netters and bottom longliners.

In the Aegean fisheries, the main catch of the coastal fleet is brown shrimp during spring and early summer, and cuttlefish and octopus in the winter. Purse seiners focus on anchovy and sardine. Trawlers operating in the winter catch mainly red mullet, hake, octopus, prawn, shrimp and crayfish. Greek vessels also fish for bluefin tuna further afield in the Mediterranean.

Greece is one of seven EU member states against which the European Commission has started infringement procedures for failing to send tuna catch reports data to the Commission, and for showing a lack of obligation and responsibility to the bluefin tuna recovery plan agreed by ICCAT in 2006. Greece is affected by the ban on bluefin tuna fishing imposed in September 2007 for the rest of the year by the EU because of over-fishing and dwindling stocks. Greek vessels have also been accused by NGO observers of using banned nets which pose a threat to tuna and swordfish stocks.
