Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. The island is divided and the two thirds of the land area under the control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU in 2004.

The marine capture fishery consists of the inshore fishery, the trawl fishery and the multipurpose fishery. There is also one purse seiner operating in Cypriot waters. The most important species exploited are demersals and large pelagics. Picarel is the dominant species, the other most significant species caught are bogue, surmullet, common cuttlefish, red mullet and Atlantic bluefin tuna. Catches of most species have been in steady decline since the mid-1900s. However, Cyprus will gain a higher proportion of the EU bluefin tuna quota in 2008.

All fish caught are marketed fresh in Cyprus. The tuna that is exported (exclusively to Japan) is farmed. Despite its small contribution to gross national income, the fisheries sector is an important element in the economy of several coastal areas.

The Cypriot fishing policy aims to enhance the economic contribution of the fisheries sector, safeguard the income of those dependent on fishing and sustainably manage marine resources so that they are maintained at high levels on a long-term basis. Fisheries management involves institutional, economic and financial interventions and control measures. In the trawl fishery, vessel numbers are restricted, mesh sizes are regulated and fishing depths and seasons are controlled. In the inshore fishery, the number of licenses is capped and certain net types are banned.

However, Cyprus is one of seven EU member states against which the European Commission has started infringement procedures for failing to send catch reports data to the Commission, and for showing a lack of obligation and responsibility to the bluefin tuna recovery plan agreed by ICCAT in 2006. Cyprus is affected by the ban on bluefin tuna fishing imposed in September 2007 for the rest of the year by the EU because of over-fishing and dwindling stocks.
