The US has the world's largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), covering eight large marine ecosystems as diverse as the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Bering Sea. Inshore marine fisheries are managed by state or regional Marine Fisheries Commissions, fisheries in the EEZ beyond state jurisdiction are the responsibility of the federal system which comprises eight Fishery management Councils and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), also known as the National Oceans and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In 2002, the US was the fourth largest exporter of fishery products. Japan, Canada, South Korea, China and Germany were the main destinations for exports. Many species in the various marine regions are overfished; these include salmon species in the Pacific Coast region, cod, haddock and yellowtail flounder in the northeast region, and bigeye, albacore and bluefin tunas in the Atlantic regions. However, the situation is not all bad; for example, many resources in the Alaska region are currently underutilized and present long-term potential for exploitation. Alaska's salmon species have produced bumper harvest recently, and the domestic development of groundfish fisheries has been a great success. The wide range of species inhabiting the Western Pacific region are also in a healthy state.

NOAA is establishing marine protected areas and individual fishing quotas, reducing fishing capacity, and implementing ecosystem-based fishery management. Significant progress has been made in recent years in re-building a number of depleted stocks.

In January 2007 President Bush signed the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006. The new law mandates the use of annual catch limits and accountability measures to end overfishing, provides for widespread market-based fishery management through limited access programmes, and calls for increased international cooperation.
