Thailand has a 2,620km coastline and fishing contributes significantly to the economy. Fish is the primary animal protein for most people and demand is increasing. Seafood is one of the top income generating industries for Thailand, and the sector contributes around 2% to GDP. The main export items are frozen shrimp and canned tuna. Major importers are Japan, the US and the EU.

Marine fisheries account for around 80% of total fisheries production. The main species caught are sardinellas, anchovies, mackerel, scads, breams, big-eyes and lizard fish. Although a key export product, shrimp only accounts for around 5% of the marine catch.

The government has developed a National Fishery Development Plan which aims to maintain food security and foreign exchange earnings whilst ensuring sustainability in the sector. Measurements introduced include banning certain fishing gear, restricting fishing seasons and areas, prohibiting destructive fishing practices, reducing excess fishing capacity, regulating mesh sizes and strengthening institutional legal and financial frameworks.

In recent months, there have been numerous cases of Thai fishermen and vessels being detained for illegally fishing in the territorial waters of other countries in the region. However the government is working with other nations in the region to clamp down on illegal fishing, and was a signatory to an agreement in May 2007 aimed at increasing regional data-sharing and surveillance.
