The Baltic Sea is the most important fishing area for Sweden with 45% of total national landings. Other key areas are the Skagerrak, the Kattegat, the North Sea and the North Atlantic. Overall the contribution to the economy is marginal (approximately 0.2% of GDP) but the importance of the sector in some local economies is high.

The key target species are cod, herring, sprat, nephrops and northern prawn. Vessels targeting cod were affected by the recent cod crisis in the Baltic Sea and North Sea and total quotas were reduced by approximately 25% in 2003. In 2007, NGOs raised concerns that cod caught illegally in the Baltic Sea was finding its way into the Swedish market. WWF claimed up to half the cod sold or served was caught outside set quotas.

ICES (the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) has assessed Swedens key stocks in the commercial fishery and found that a number are either at risk of being harvested unsustainably or are already being harvested unsustainably. These include cod stocks in the Baltic Sea, Kattegat, Skagerrak and North Sea, mackerel in the Skagerrak and North Sea and some herring stocks.

The EU is the main export market for Swedens fish and fish products, mainly fresh and chilled fish. Sweden also imports increasing quantities of fish, 80% of which comes from Norway.
