Norway

Norway has very rich fishing grounds and is the largest fishing nation in Europe and the 10th largest in the world. Marine fisheries have traditionally been of great economic importance, particularly in the western and northern coastal regions. The North Sea, Kattegat and Skagerrak are rich in herring, sprat, cod and other groundfish, and the Norwegian and Barents Sea contains Arcto-Norwegian cod, capelin, shrimp, herring and mackerel.

The most important Norwegian cod stock is the Arcto-Norwegian cod, which migrates between the economic zones of Norway and Russia in the Barents Sea. Stocks declined steadily until the late 1980s, but joint management between Norway and Russia has seen positive results, though illegal fishing persists and vessels from both countries are regularly detained.

Many stocks in the North Sea, particularly demersal, are at low levels. However, herring and mackerel stocks appear to be relatively healthy. In the coastal fisheries, Norwegian coastal cod quotas were halved a few years ago because of stock concerns, and the capelin and redfish fisheries were closed. However, the Northeast Arctic cod stock is currently healthy.

Norway is one of the worlds largest exporters of fish products; approximately 90% of landed fish is exported. The largest market is the EU, in particular Denmark and France. Other important markets are Japan and Russia. The fisheries sector is the second largest export industry, after oil and gas, representing 5-6% of exports.

In 2002, the government produced a white paper on the need for sustainable development to be integrated into management plans, including the implementation of ecosystem based management and the precautionary approach, and the need to balance commercial interests with the need to protect the marine environment and biodiversity.

Norway is an active member of a number of RFMOs and other fishery bodies, and is a key player in the search for solutions to illegal fishing, and in research on conservation and traceability measures.

FishPopTrace

FishPopTrace is a collaborative project involving 15 research groups (from the EU, Norway and Russia), specialized in fish population genetics, molecular biology, proteomics, microchemistry and biochemistry, experts in wildlife forensics, stakeholders of the fisheries industry and, as a scientific consultant, a senior staff member of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). FishPopTrace was launched in March 2008 under the umbrella of the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The key to FishPopTrace's approach, which focuses on cod, herring, sole and hake, as initial sentinel species, is to develop a high throughput set of tools for species and population-specific identity of fish and fish products throughout the food supply chain.
