Canada's marine fishing industry operates on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The most valuable Atlantic species are lobster, crab, shrimp and scallop, and the most valuable Pacific species are salmon, halibut, herring and groundfish. Canada is the world's seventh largest exporter of fish and fishery products, with most products heading for the US, Japan and Europe.

Following continuous decline in the landing of Atlantic groundfish (mainly cod), and the collapse of the stock, a moratorium was imposed on commercial fishing for Northern Cod in 1992. Originally the moratorium was intended to be in place for two years, but the stocks continued to decline, so it remained in place until 1999, when a commercial cod fishery opened off the Newfoundland coast. For several years after the cod moratorium a snow crab fishery thrived in Newfoundland, but in 2000 quotas were cut back considerably after fears of heavy stock depletion. A series of buy-back schemes for vessels were put into operation.

The Pacific salmon industry is also suffering declining stocks. Strict limits have been forced on the places and times when fisheries are open in an effort to conserve and develop fish resources. A great deal of investment has been made in salmon hatcheries and 10-20% of the commercial fishery now derives from the fish released from these. Efforts have been made to reduce the fleet through vessel licensing and buy-back programmes. Groundfish, hake, halibut and herring stocks are in reasonable condition and have benefited from the introduction of transferable quotas.

The Canadian northern prawn trawl fishery and Pacific halibut fishery are currently undergoing assessment by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans of the federal Canadian government is responsible for managing the country's fisheries, and for related policy and research. Canada is a member of the High Seas Task Force.

Endangered Fish Alliance

The Endangered Fish Alliance was started in Toronto in 2002 by a group of concerned chefs, restaurateurs, caring food professionals, conservationists, and was coordinated by staff members of the Toronto enviroguide. It is a not-for-profit organisation, which asks its members not to serve four endangered fish - swordfish, Chilean sea bass, orange roughy and certain types of caviar. The organisation encourages members to learn about the state of the world‘s fisheries before choosing seafood for their menus or inventory.
