Australia

Australia's commercial fishing sector is the country's fourth largest rural food based sector. Around 200 marine species are caught commercially in Australia's huge fishing zone, which ranges from tropical to sub-Antarctic. The main species caught are prawns, lobster, abalone, scallops, oysters and tuna. The three high value species, shrimp, lobster and abalone, dominate the sector. Australia's marine resources are basically fully exploited and serious stock depletions have occurred in southern bluefin tuna, gemfish and shark species. Attempts are being made to address this through recovery strategies and strict management controls aimed at limiting production to sustainable levels.

Most Australian fisheries are managed by both the individual states and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA). Legislation for fisheries management is now based on the principles of Ecological Sustainable development (ESD) and therefore addresses not only the management of target species but also broader ecosystem management issues, including by-catch, impacts on rare or endangered species and preservation of marine habitats. Australia was the first country to develop a comprehensive, national plan to protect and manage its oceans; the Oceans Policy aims for integrated management of marine ecosystems and is used as a basis for fisheries management planning.

Australia has taken a tough line on illegal fishing in its waters, which has led to a 90% drop in illegal fishing boats sighted in 2007. Significant resources have been allocated for monitoring, control and surveillance, and tough penalties have been enforced in recent years, including jail terms, and vessel confiscation or burning. Most illegal fishers are either small fishers from Indonesia or larger operators flagged in China or Taiwan.

Australia is a member of the High Seas Task Force.
