Angola

The Angolan coastline is 1,650km long, with two diverging currents (the Angola and Benguela currents), which create a strong upwelling system that supports vast marine resources. However, overfishing has contributed to significant reductions in resources.

The main industrial fisheries are demersal (sea breams, groupers, snappers, croakers and hake), pelagic (horse mackerel and sardinellas), purse seine (sardinellas, pilchard, and horse mackerel), shrimp and tuna.

Artisanal fishing activities are scattered along the coast and the Institute for the Development of Artisanal Fisheries has put great effort into developing the sector with the aim of contributing to poverty alleviation and food security. One third of Angola's animal protein intake comes from fish and most of the fish caught is sold within the country as demand outstrips supply. Fisheries contribute 3% of Angola's GNP, and direct fish revenues are collected from vessel license fees, fishing quota fees and violations levies.

Angola is currently included in a programme of country studies by the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa involving exploring what is known about the scale and nature of illegal fishing and weaknesses in regulation of the fishing sector.

As a follow on action from the High Seas Task Force, the UK government is supporting an African policy process to tackle IUU fishing in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa. The programme brief and first update is available here.

Stop Illegal fishing

The commitment to stop illegal fishing already exists in Southern Africa. Countries, organisations and individuals are fighting illegal fishing on a daily basis. The Stop Illegal Fishing programme brings new international support to this fight. The Programme aims to facilitate a coherent regional commitment to tackling illegal fishing between the SADC coastal Member States of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Tanzania.
